Arrival at Oklahoma State University

August 16, 2019 Elijah arrived at Oklahoma State University this week, and he is excited to mark the beginning of the Schnitzler Research Group at OSU.

2019 Gordon Research Conference in

Atmospheric Chemistry

August 5, 2019 Elijah attended the Atmospheric Chemistry GRC in Newry, Maine, from July 28 to August 2. He presented observations of the photochemical aging of light- absorbing organic aerosol, or brown carbon, collected during his postdoctoral work at the University of Toronto. This work demonstrates the critical role that ambient temperature and relative humidity play in the fate of brown carbon.

February 14, 2020 The group participated in an exciting collaborative campaign carried out at the OSU Fire Protection Laboratory, hosted by Prof. Rob Agnew and Prof. Haejun Park in the department of Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology.

July 1, 2020 Colton received this departmental award for outstanding graduate students.

December 15, 2020 Katrina’s ongoing work on the hygroscopicity of secondary brown carbon aerosol was presented in a virtual poster.

Alison joins the group

January 22, 2021 Alison Boone has joined the group as an undergraduate research assistant. She will be developing procedures to prepare thin films of organic compounds for gas uptake.

Nathan joins the group

September 27, 2021 Nathan Huskins has joined the group as an undergraduate research assistant. He will be contributing to the characterization of the light absorption of biomass burning aerosol.
2021 Midwest Regional Meeting

of the American Chemical Society

October 22, 2021 Habeeb, Katrina, Colton, and Elijah attended the MWRM of the ACS in Springfield, Missouri, October 20-22. Habeeb, Katrina, and Colton presented posters on reactive uptake of ozone to azo dyes, water uptake to secondary brown carbon aerosol, and modelled absorptivity of organic compounds identified in brown carbon, respectively. Elijah presented a poster summarizing other projects the group has been working on to characterize primary biomass burning organic aerosol.

Elevia and Elizabeth join the group

August 20, 2021 Elevia Bruce and Elizabeth Coody have joined the group as undergraduate research assistants. They will be contributing to the development of procedures for the characterization  of biomass burning aerosol and the preparation of novel thin films.
The Schnitzler Group awarded

OCAST grant

October 5, 2021 The Schnitzler Group has been awarded a grant from the Oklahoma Center for Advancement of Science & Technology to study water uptake and light absorption and scattering by biomass burning aerosol from prescribed fire in the southern Great Plains. The funding is $100,000 over two years.

Sithumi joins the group

January 10, 2022 Sithumi Liyanage has joined the group as a first-year graduate student. One focus of her work will be reactions occuring at the gas-aerosol interface.

Troye joins the group

December 3, 2021 Troye Jirka has joined the group as an undergraduate research assistant in the Freshman Research Scholar program. He will be contributing to the characterization of the water uptake of organic aerosol.

November 19, 2021 Elijah was invited to present research from the group virtually to faculty and students in the Chemistry Graduate Seminar at the University of New Haven.

April 5, 2021 Elijah contributed to an invited review article on aging of brown carbon aerosol in the atmosphere.

Forum article published

May 18, 2020 Elijah contributed to a forum article on smoke from biomass burning in the Great Plains, which was selected for a special collection on Frontiers in Fire Ecology.

October 19, 2023 Habeeb, Katrina, and Colton gave talks on their recently published projects, discussing the impacts of ultraviolet irradiation on primary brown carbon, the impacts of photo- oxidation on secondary brown carbon, and the optical properties of cinnamaldehydes in brown carbon, respecticely, and Sithumi presented a poster on her ongoing project on hydrogen peroxide formation. Well done!
